It was raining goals as India’s
men’s hockey team crushed Hong Kong 26-0 in a Group A match of the 2018 Asian
Games at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex hockey field in Jakarta, on
Wednesday.
India, a member of the big five of
the International Hockey Federation, utterly dominated Hong Kong, which is
ranked 45th in the world.
Led by Chan Hou Fung, Hong Kong,
under Gregory Fabian’s instruction, failed to gain control over possession and
was limited to playing in a limited area of the pitch. India’s technique, speed
and strength proved far too superior for Hong Kong’s vulnerable defense.
Pinned down by India’s relentless
attacks, the Hong Kong players could do little but assume a defensive position,
with their opponent scoring one goal after another.
India’s major goal scorers were
Singh Rupinder Pal (4 goals), Singh Akashdeep (3), Harmanpreet (3), Singh
Manpreet (2) and Kumar (2), while the remaining scorers scored one goal each.
India’s hockey team coach Singh
Harendra said his team had performed remarkably and were able to launch a
variety of attacks, with very good coordination among team members.
“I’m very happy. Our players showed
their best in defense and offense,” Herendra remarked.
