Japanese athlete Noguchi Akiyo won gold in the women's combined sport climbing after collecting the most points in three appearances in speed, bouldering and lead.
Initially, the 29-year-old finished last among the six contestants in the speed category. However, she rose to first when competing in her specialty, bouldering. Then, the athlete of 165 centimetres in height and weight of 52 kilograms snared the gold medal when competing in the lead category. Although finishing second, Noguchi recorded the highest accumulated points.
Based on the accumulated scores, Republic of Korea athletes Sa Sol and Kim Ja In had to settle for silver and bronze medals respectively.
Kim Ja came closest after collecting the most points in lead. But she was left behind when competing in the bouldering category, finishing third, while finishing fifth in speed.
"I am very happy to be able to perform optimally in this final. At first it was sad because in the speed I was ranked last, but I made sure to catch up in the boulder," said Noguchi.
Noguchi Akiyo's performance was stunning in bouldering. Within five minutes, she reached 4T 4z points, or the 4th peak, while her compatriot Ito Futaba only scored 3T 4z point.
When competing in the lead category, she finished second after Kim Ja In. Noguchi collected 40+ points at 4:04 seconds, winning gold based on accumulated points.
