Philippines
lifter Hidilyn Diaz won gold at the 2018 Asian Games in the women’s
weightlifting 53-kilogram category at the JI Expo Convention Center in
Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday. The gold is the Philippines’ first in
weightlifting at the Games.
Diaz
lifted a total of 207 kg – 92 kg from snatch and 115 kg from clean and jerk.
The
silver medal went to Turkmenistan lifter Kristina Shermetova, who hoisted a
total weight of 206 kg, recording 93 kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk.
Thailand
took bronze after Surodchana Khambao lifted a total weight of 201 kg, with 86
kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk.
In
the same class, Indonesia lifter Syarah Anggraini only lifted 197 kg in total,
with 90 kg in snatch and 107 kg in clean and jerk.
The
last event (53 kg) of day two of the weightlifting competition was interesting
because of the rivalry between Kristina and Hidilyn. In snatch, Kristina
managed to lift 93 kg, 1 kg above Hidilyn with 92 kg.
When
it came to clean and jerk, they both started with barbells that weighed 110 kg.
In her second lifting attempt, Kristina raised a barbell weighing 113 kg and
Hidilyn 115 kg.
In
her third and final attempt, Kristina tried to lift 116 kg but failed. The gold
then automatically went to Hidilyn, although she also failed in her third
attempt after trying to lift 117 kg.
