BUENOS
AIRES:- One of the most popular sports among
spectators at Buenos Aires 2018 had its final day in the Youth Olympic Park and
thousands of spectators poured into the America Pavillion, just as they have
done throughout the competition.
Gymnastics is one of the classic
disciplines that have been included in the Olympic Games since the first
edition of the modern times and it remains one of the main attractions today.
In addition to artistic, rhythmic
and trampoline gymnastics, the third summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games
featured the acrobatic discipline, which combines skill, strength, technique
and style. Day after day, spectators filled the stands to see the world’s top
gymnasts in action.
"It's incredible, I didn’t
think it would be something of this magnitude. It seemed like we were in
another country," Valeria, a gymnastics teacher at the local San Lorenzo
Club, told buenosaires2018.com while she waited with her trainees to watch the
final day of the competition.
"We came because the best
gymnasts are here," said Kimey, a 15-year-old who was excited to see the
rising stars of the discipline, such as all-around gold medallists Italy’s
Giorgia Villa and Japan’s Takeru Kitazono.
Villa and Kitazono were the big
sensations in artistic gymnastics, taking three and five gold medals,
respectively. They earned the public’s adoration and some spectators even
chanted their names during the victory ceremonies.
"This is a show you don’t see
every day. It's worth all the wait," said Antonio, 46, who had been
queuing for hours with his daughters to see the last day of the competition,
which featured the rhythmic gymnastics final.
Since no Argentine athletes were
competing on Tuesday, the young local fans chose their own favourites, cheering
especially for Russia’s Daria Trubnikova.
"Here is the future of this
discipline, they are the ones that will compete in Tokyo and it’s great to be
able to see them in our country," said Mercedes Gomez, a member of the
Argentine rhythmic gymnastics team.
