Thailand
women's handball team dominated Hong Kong, China in the 2018 Asian Games Group
B qualifying match at the POPKI Stadium in Cibubur, East Jakarta, Sunday with a
final score of 30-24.
Since the
first minute, the Thailand team led by Sunanta Hongbooddee showed aggressive
attacking play. In less than 20 minutes of the first half, at least 10
violations had been committed by Hong Kong’s players around their penalty box.
Thailand’s
attacks tested Hong Kong goalkeeper Yu Ka Chung.
Thailand’s
captain Sunanta Hongbooddee said the victory over Hong Kong had boosted her
team's confidence ahead of their next match against Malaysia on Aug. 21.
"This
victory gives us confidence to beat Malaysia in the next match," she said.
She added
Thailand’s coach had emphasized that they should press the Hong Kong team.
Thailand’s
top scorer with 10 goals, Pawinee Bunjarern, said she would play better against
Malaysia and try to score more goals.
After winning
13-10 in the first round, Thailand’s aggression did not stop as they continued
to pressure Hong Kong after the break. They continuously threatened Hong Kong's
defense, while Hong Kong’s attempts were halted by goalkeeper Pakakan Thongkot.
Entering the
27th minute of the second half, Hong Kong tried to ramp up their attack, but
Pakakan could not be breached.
In the 29th
minute, Hong Kong player Ngo Mei Cheung tried to minimize the deficit by adding
a goal, with the score at 30-24.
Until the
referee AL Wahibi blew the whistle that marked the end of the second round,
Thailand remained superior to Hong Kong with a final score of 30-24.
