Aji
Bangkit Pamungkas won Indonesia’s fourth gold medal in pencak silat after
crushing Singapore’s Sheik Ferdous Sheik Alauddin in the men’s 85 to 90
kilogram final on Monday.
Aji
whitewashed his opponent 5-0 at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) in East
Jakarta.
The
two athletes’ defenses were up for most of the first round and this prompted
the referee to deduct one point from their score.
Aji
began to attack in the second round and managed to hit Sheik Ferdous several
times. The Singaporean contender reacted by launching several counterattacks.
The
fight grew intense in the third round with Aji and Sheik Ferdous punching and
kicking other. Sheik Ferdous attempted to take down Aji by locking and pulling
his opponent’s arm, but the referee reprimanded him because the throw was
illegal.
In
the end, Aji emerged victorious.
