Indonesia has won silver and bronze in skateboarding at the Jakabaring Sports City in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Wednesday.
Indonesian skateboarder Jason Dennis Lijnzaat won the silver medal in the men’s park category for a score of 68.33 points, while Pevi Permana Putra won bronze for 67.00 points.
Kensuke Sasaoka of Japan won the gold medal with 76.00 points. The ranking between them is similar to the preliminary round held on Tuesday.
Kensuke dominated the game and continued to top the standings, while the two home athletes settled behind.
In the final, as in the preliminary round, each contestant had three runs of 45 seconds. The jury chose the highest score of the three runs as the final score.
Kensuke displayed a consistent performance up to the final showdown, and his jumps were higher than those of his competitors. The 19-year-old was focused and not intimidated by the Indonesian supporters, who continued to cheer on the home athletes. Kensuke achieved his highest score of 76.00 points in his second run.
He executed a diverse range of tricks almost flawlessly, including a successful indy air, judo and stalefish. Kensuke also repeatedly ground and slid his board on the edge of the bowl for a frontside bluntslide, nosegrind and backside smith grind over the curve.
Both Indonesian skateboarders did their best in an attempt to outscore Kensuke. Pevi Permana Putra bagged 63.66 points for his first run and 67.00 in the second attempt. In the last run, the West Sumatran-native aimed to perform a different set of tricks to reap more points, including a benihana and a boneless. However, he failed on an alley oop over the hip, a 270-degree flip over the edge of the bowl and earned 61.66 points.
The best shot at the gold medal for Indonesia came from Jason Dennis Linjzaat. In the first run, he collected 66.33 points, which he improved on with 68.33 points in the second run. The second run was the 14-year-old’s best, as he succeeded in performing an invert, indy grab, tuck knee and done-footed ollie over the hip as well as a rodeo flip. In the third run, however, Jason fell while trying to repeat the rode flip, so he only collected 65.66 points to finish second.
Indonesian team coach Charlie Hobbies praised both skateboarders for their effort. He admitted that the Japanese team had proven to be the one to beat from the start of the park competition. “They were more prepared and have better facilities in their home country, as well as regular competitions,” said Charlie.
