Chinese Taipei secured a spot in the
next stage of women's basketball at the Asian Games after beating India 84-61
in a Group X qualifying game at the Gelora Bung Karno Basketball Hall in
Senayan, Jakarta, on Sunday.
With that result, the team of Albert
Wagner has won all three matches played so far and tops the Group X standings
with 6 points.
In the final match of the preliminary
round, Taipei will face host Indonesia on Tuesday and can secure the leadership
of Group X with a victory.
By contrast, the defeat has made it
even more difficult for India to advance to the next round, because their
opponents in the remaining two games are also fairly strong, namely the unified
team of Korea (COR) on Monday and Indonesia two days later.
Teamwork proved the key to success
in Chinese Taipei's victory over India, with every player in the team scoring
at least two points.
Peng Szuchin led the Taipei scoring
list in the match with 14 points, followed by Yenyu Chen with 13 points and
team captain Pingjen Huang with 11 points.
In the Indian squad, which only
recorded a shot accuracy of 34 percent compared to 43 percent for Chinese Taipei,
Rajapriyadharshini Rajaganapathi became the top scorer with 13 points, followed
by Raspreet Sidhu with 12 and Kaur Sangeeta with 11 points.
Leading 33-28 after the first half
of the match, Taipei skyrocketed to pocket 31 additional points in the third
quarter, 10 of which were contributed by Peng Szuchin.
In addition to gaining 31 points,
Chinese Taipei also managed to limit India's chances of scoring with only 17
points to close the third quarter with a 64-45 advantage.
Taipei scored an additional 20
points in the final quarter, even though Peng Szuchin spent the 10-minute
period on the bench, to secure an 84-61 victory over India when the bell rang.
