China’s female beach volleyball team took home the 2018 Asian Games gold medal after beating the Japanese duo at Jakabaring Sports City in Palembang, South Sumatra on Monday.
The Chinese duo, Wang Fan and Xinyi Xia bested Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami of Japan with a final score of 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-10).
In the first set, Wang Fan and Xinyi Xia were forced to play catch up, but with hard spikes from Wang Fan, the Chinese athletes managed to even the score to 6-6.
The Chinese duo continued to pressure their opponents, as they again trailed behind Mika Ishii and Megumi Murakami 10-15, but finally conceded the set 17-21.
In the second set, however, with strong support from the spectators, Wang Fan and Xinyi Xia were able to dominate and develop their game. With strong spikes from Wang Fan, the Chinese players closed the set with a score of 21-19.
In the third set, both teams gave their all. Wang Fan and Xia Xinyi, who are taller than the Japanese duo, managed to capitalize on this physical advantage and collected one point after another.
The taller Wang could effectively block spikes from the Japan side and send strong spikes back. Finally, the Chinese duo closed the match 15-10 and earned a gold medal for their country.
Mika Ishii and Megumi Murakami went home with the silver medal, while the bronze goes to the Indonesian team.
