China displayed its prowess in table tennis after defeating DPR Korea 3-0 in the final match of the women’s table tennis competition, bringing home the gold medal. The match was held at JIExpo, Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon.
China’s smooth path to Tuesday’s final clearly demonstrates their superiority in table tennis. Of the three matches held in the finals, the Chinese women won nine sets and only lost one set when Wang Manyu was forced to surrender in the first set against Kim Nam-hae with a score of 8-11.
In the first match, China's first singles player Zhu Yuling defeated Kim Song I with 3-0 (11-9, 11-8 and 11-6), while its second player Cheng Meng defeated Cha Hyo-sim 3-0 (11-6, 11-8 and 14-12). In the third and final match, Wang Manyu defeated Kin Nam-hae with a score of 3-1 (8-11, 11-5, 11-4 and 11-7).
The Chinese players were excellent with their strokes, launching strong, but swivelling the ball either using the left or the right side of the bet, rallying the ball, playing outstanding serves and ball returns as well as using the right strategy in choosing the players.
They also had the benefit of a longer rest than the Koreans and they also had an easy win against the Republic of Korea in the semifinals, unlike their opponents who had a tough match against Hong Kong, China.
Chinese coach Sun Li expressed his happiness over the result of the final match, citing his team’s long preparation for this year’s Asian Games as the reason for their success.
"We lost to DPR Korea at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea and we can now take our revenge. It's a victory for China and also for me as a coach," he said.
Chinese table tennis player Cheng Meng said she was satisfied with her performance and would now focus on competing in individual events later on.
The youngest Chinese player, Zhu Yuling, said she was very impressed because it was her first time competing at such a multisport event and contributing a gold medal for her country.
"I tried hard to win when I was trusted to play. Of course it's nice to win and my seniors help a lot by sharing [playing] techniques," she said.
The bronze medals went to the Republic of Korea and Hong Kong, China.
