BUENOS AIRES:-  Argentine boxer Mirco Jehiel Cuello beat Morocco’s Abdessamad Abbaz in the men’s bantamweight category and added another medal to the host nation’s tally. Uzbekistan’s Maksym Halinichev won the gold.
Argentina’s Mirco Jehiel Cuello dominated the boxing match against Morocco’s Abdessamad Abbaz and was proclaimed the winner by unanimous decision. Three of the judges put him in front with 30-27, while the other two gave him a score of 29-28.
The local fighter intimidated the African boxer from the start to the finish of the bout with his favourite shot - the cross hook - and ended the third round with a fist held high in victory.
Cuello, 18 years old and the father of a baby boy, did not hide his happiness after winning the bronze medal.
"The key to this fight was to leave everything in the last round. My opponent was tired and I still had energy left,” he said. “I'm very happy. Although I wanted the gold medal, I'm still going away very happy.”
The spectators also showed their love of Cuello and accompanied him with songs and cries of support throughout the match. At the end of the fight, Cuello, who is from the Argentinian province of Santa Fe, went over to the stands to celebrate his victory.
"I celebrated with my teammates, they are like my brothers. My friends and my family were also present. My son is the one who gives me a lot of strength to continue,” he said. “Being at Buenos Aires 2018 was unique, I had never experienced anything like this. It's very exciting."
Cuello, however, has no intention of scaling down his training now that he has a Youth Olympic medal and is already thinking about his future.
“My next goal is to get on the senior team and qualify for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020,” he said.
