Sweden Gold Medal Win in Beach Handball
BUENOS
AIRES:- On the last day of beach volleyball
competition at Green Park, the local duo made up of Mauro Zelayeta and Juan
Bautista Amieva Tarditti climbed the podium in a sport that was among the
favourites among spectators.
In the match for the bronze,
Zelayeta and Amieva Tarditti beat the Hungarian duo Artur Hajos and Bence
Attila Streli to wrap up the tournament on a good note despite their tough
defeat in three sets in the semifinal against the Netherlands on Tuesday.
"The podium was a goal for us
from the beginning. We knew we had a good game but we didn’t know what we were
going to find," said Amieva Tarditti, who was born in the Argentinian
province of Mendoza but moved to his friend Zelayeta’s house in coastal city
Mar del Plata to be able to train together and be in top form for the home
Youth Olympic Games.
"When we scored the last point,
the only thing that crossed my mind was that I wanted to put the medal around
my neck and not have any more sun! I could not digest what we had achieved. It’s
a real joy," Zelayeta said.
At Nanjing 2014, the duo that was
representing Argentina at that time also won a bronze medal.
The medallists received support from
the local spectators as well as their relatives, who came from Mendoza and Mar
del Plata.
"My friends, my father and my
three brothers came here, and my grandparents too, who almost missed their
flight. I want to thank them for their support," said Amieva Tarditti.
Zelayeta could relate: "My
whole family came, even my grandmother, and I can never get her to leave the
house, so I am very happy about that."
