“These were truly Youth Olympic
Games of a new era,” Bach said. “These Youth Olympic Games were more urban.
There were more females and there was more inclusion than at any edition of an
Olympic Games before, not only Youth Games.”
The IOC president praised the
efforts of the Games organisers and praised the venues chosen for Buenos Aires
2018:
"The concept of parks was a
success because he was able to take sports to the people,” Bach said. “The
Games will leave a great legacy for Buenos Aires.
“These Youth Olympic Games united
the country,” he added. “Argentinians have every reason to be extremely proud.”
Bach also spoke about the
record-breaking number of spectators who came to watch the biggest multi-sport
event in Argentina’s history and especially praised the Opening Ceremony at the
Obelisk in central Buenos Aires.
“These Youth Olympic Games were
extremely innovative, from the beginning to the end. Beginning with the Opening
Ceremony in the centre of the city and the sharing of this Opening Ceremony
with the spectators who showed up in hundreds of thousands to celebrate the
young athletes,” he said.
“I hope that today we can reach the
one million spectators. We’re already very close,” he added ahead of the
Closing Ceremony for Buenos Aires 2018. “This is another Olympic record to be
established by these Youth Olympic Games.”
Meanwhile, the president of the
Buenos Aires 2018 Organising Committee Gerardo Werthein shared what he
identified as the keys to success: "This is a product of union, of showing
respect to a project and working tirelessly. I have a lot of people to thank. They
have all shown that we are capable of achieving incredible things."
Werthein then spoke about sport
performances and recognised the success of the Argentine delegation.
"I want to highlight the
historical performance of our young athletes. They have become an example for
all the kids in the country. With this project, we have expanded the depth of
our sport and leave a legacy in that sense."
Buenos Aires 2018 will live on.
