The Brazilian Bruna Takahashi Gold Medal

Win in Table Tennis

BUENOS AIRES - Bruna Takahashi’s Japanese last name has always helped to blend her in with the medal favourites from the Asian table tennis powerhouses. But after her winning streak in the group round at Buenos Aires 2018, the Brazilian herself is starting to believe that she can win the top prize.
The Brazilian Bruna Takahashi, 18, got the taste for table tennis at age 10 when she discovered the first thrills of winning matches in her native city Sao Paulo.
At the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, the Brazilian has emerged as one of the main contenders for the gold medal after winning all three of her Group G games with an ideal score of 4-0.
The winning streak has given Takahashi extra confidence to believe that she can win the tournament. However, she refuses to let herself get carried away by this enthusiasm, and points out that the representatives of China and Japan are still the main favourites.
“I see myself as a possible candidate to win gold, but the main favourites are the Asians of China and Japan. I know it will be very difficult, but I will give it my all,” said the Brazilian table tennis player.
Takahashi took up table tennis 10 years ago.
“I started playing at age eight, when I got to know a sports club near my house. Two years later, in 2010, I started to train harder and played at international tournaments. I started to win and I liked it a lot,” she said.
As for the curiosity of being Brazilian and having a Japanese last name, Takahashi explained that her last name is of Asian origin because her father’s grandparents are Japanese.
