Japan defeated Thailand 19-5 in
women’s water polo at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Center in Jakarta on
Sunday.
Arima Yumi and Inaba Akari were the
top scorers with five goals each against Thailand and its goalie Jangjai
Rungravee. With the win, Japan sits in second place in the women's water polo
standings at the Asian Games.
Japan dominated from the start,
although Thailand, led by captain Saraikarn Varistha, carried out attacks on
several occasions. The first half ended 7-2 in favor of Japan.
Entering the second half, Thailand
tried to catch up but could not reduce the gap, and Japan added two points,
making it 9-2 early in the third quarter.
Thailand's rhythm was thrown off and
Japan was able to bombard a stagnant defense of Ferri Daniele's players,
expanding the lead to 15-2.
In the fourth quarter, Thailand
added three points, one of which was scored through Somyos Thitirat. But Japan
also added the score, ending the game at 19-5.
With the victory, Japan adds two
points, good enough for second place.
First place is firmly held by China
with six points from three wins. Indonesia sits in fourth under Kazakhstan with
two points from one win.
On Monday, Aug. 20, Indonesia will
face Kazakhstan at 2:30 p.m. Japan plays Hong Kong in the second match of the
day followed by China versus Thailand at 5:10 p.m.
