Twin sisters Jiang Tingting and Jiang Wenwen from China won the Asian Games gold medal in women’s artistic swimming duets for the third time on Tuesday at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Aquatics Center in Central Jakarta.
The twins scored a total of 186.5101 points.
The first scored 92.4101 points in their technical routine on Monday and secured the gold after collecting an additional 94.1000 points in the free routine on Tuesday.
"We are satisfied with our performance today," Tingting told reporters.
This is the twins’ third Asian Games gold medal after also clinching the top prize in Doha in 2006 and in 2010 in Guangzhou, China.
China claimed the duets gold medal in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, through the performance of other swimmers.
The 31-year-old twins, who won gold in the 2017 World Aquatics Championships, trained intensively for two months for the 2018 Asian Games.
Given their extensive preparation and experience, the sisters considered their performance to be outstanding, particularly their Flamingo movement, which they performed in the duets free routine.
"Our quality and expression made us look more attractive than the younger swimmers," Wenwen said.
The sisters were particularly proud that they could outclass their toughest competitor, Japan.
"It is our duty to defeat Japan," Tingting said.
Japanese duo Yukiko Inui and Megumu Yoshida took home silver after securing a total of 182.3363 points. The silver medal could be considered an incredible achievement considering that Yukiko and Megumu have only been paired for two months
