Equestrienne Jacqueline Wing Ying Siu from Hong Kong, China, won a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games individual dressage competition held at the Jakarta International Equestrian Park (JIEP) Pulomas, East Jakarta, on Thursday.
Jacqueline and her horse, JC Fuerst On Tour, scored a total of 77.045 percent in the individual dressage freestyle middle class (individual intermediate 1 freestyle) event, earning a technical score of 73.250 percent and artistic score of 80.000 percent.
She beat Malaysian rider Mohd Qabil Ambak (76.620 percent) who won silver and South Korean rider Hyeok Kim (75.705 percent) who earned the bronze medal.
Jacqueline, who has participated in four Asian Games editions for Hong Kong, said the individual dressage competition had been quite fierce and she had felt the pressure from her competitors.
"We all try to get the best results. I try to spur myself, and today, I think it was in line with our plans," said the 35-year-old.
Qabil said he had also felt the pressure in the final match and it had affected his performance, considering that in the previous two matches he ranked number one.
"Today the competition was quite tight. I felt the pressure and tension," he said.
The fight for gold in the individual dressage freestyle category was contested by 15 riders from nine countries.
Indonesian riders competing in the event were Dara Ninggar Prameswari with her horse Commodore and Larasati Gading with her horse Calaiza T.
Dara Ninggar scored 67.925 percent and was ranked 10th out of 15 athletes, while Larasati garnered a score of 66.715 percent to land in 11th place.
The competition was presided by five judges: Maria Eleanor Schwennesen from Australia, Peter Johannes Holler from Germany, Freddy P.H. Leyman from Belgium, Susan Wendy Hobson from New Zealand and Elisabeth Max-Theurer from Austria.
Riders competing in the 2018 Asian Games’ equestrian sports will still compete for three gold medals, namely in eventing, team jumping and individual jumping.
