Paragliding
contributed on Thursday the second gold medal for Indonesia through Jafro
Megawanto in the 2018 Asian Games men’s individual accuracy category.
Silver
was won by Jirasak Witeetham from Thailand, and bronze was won by Lee Chulsoo
from Korea.
Chief
trainer of the Indonesian paragliding team, Gendon Subandono, said the team had
met the target set by the Youth and Sports Ministry of two golds. "Our own
target of one gold medal was accomplished yesterday. Today we got one more
gold, making it two golds. So the target [set by the ministry] has been
accomplished," said Gendon.
Previously,
the Indonesian paragliding team contributed one gold in the men's team accuracy
and silver in women’s team accuracy. The team will also compete for the men's
and women's team cross country events that will be held on Friday (Aug. 24).
Jafro
has performed quite well since the beginning of the team and individual
accuracy competition. His score has been well above opponents like Thailand and
Japan. On the first day of the competition on Monday (Aug. 20) Jafro led with
three points on accuracy, followed by Jirasak Witeetham of Thailand with five
points. Until the second round, the 22-year-old was still leading with six
points. In the third round, Jafro dropped to fourth, with 52 points, while his
toughest competitor Jirasak led by four points. In the fifth round, Jafro rose
to take second place with zero points, landing right at the pad point of
accuracy. Jirasak slumped to 10th position with 207 points. From the sixth
round to the ninth, Jafro led the pack and maintained his position until the competition
was over.
When
asked how he was able to maintain his top position and get the perfect zero
point, Jafro said: "Just focus on what the target is".
Jafro
will be part of the Indonesian team in the men's team cross-country, along with
four colleagues, namely Hening Paradigma, Joni Efendi, Ari Apriansyah and Roni
Pratama.
