Singapore's top swimmer Joseph Isaac
Schooling won Singapore's first gold medal after surpassing all opponents in
the 2018 Asian Games men's 100-meter butterfly stroke final at the Gelora Bung
Karno Aquatic Stadium, Jakarta, on Wednesday evening.
The 2016 Olympic gold medallist also
set a new Asian Games record with a time of 51.04 seconds, beating his previous
record of 51.76 seconds.
The 23-year-old swimmer defeated
Chinese swimmer Li Zhuhao, who took home the silver medal with a time of 51.46
seconds and Japan's Yuki Kobori, whose time of 51.77 seconds earned him bronze.
In the preliminary round, which was
held on the same day, Schooling clocked a time of 52.31 seconds.
Commenting on his gold in the 2018
Asian Games, Schooling said his achievement of defeating United States swimming
legend Michael Phelps and setting a new Olympic record at the 2016 Olympics
with 50.39 seconds cannot be associated with his achievement at this year’s
Asian Games.
"What you did two years ago has
nothing to do with what you are doing now," he told reporters.
Schooling has also contributed a
bronze medal for Singapore in the men's 4x200-meter relay free style event.
Meanwhile, Indonesia swimmer Glenn
Victor Sutanto finished in last place with a time of 53.89 seconds.
