National
women’s tennis coach Deddy Tedjamukti has said it was amazing that Indonesia
women’s singles tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi beat two seeded athletes – one
from Thailand and one from Japan – at the 2018 Asian Games.
On
her way to the quarterfinals, Aldila succeeded in defeating world number 10
Peangtarn Plipuech from Thailand, and fifth-seeded Miyu Kato from Japan 6-1,
6-0 on Tuesday.
"We
only hoped for the best and made every effort but we were surprised to see her
win over the fifth-seeded player so convincingly,” said Deddy at the Jakabaring
Tennis Court in Jakabaring Sports City, Palembang, on Tuesday.
Despite
her underdog status, Aldila’s victory over Kato was already anticipated by
Deddy, who described the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) number 172 as capable
of competing at a top level despite her lower rank.
“In
the preparatory phase, we almost beat Japan in Singapore. At the time, the
opponent was ranked 200thand there were already signs that Aldila, though rated
about 600th then, was competitive and showed great potential,” noted Deddy.
Still,
Aldila will have to face a tough challenge in the quarterfinals, when she
squares off against second-seeded Wang Qiang, who entered the quarterfinals by
defeating Kazakhstan’s Ainitdinova Gozal 6-2, 6-4. “She [Aldila] played very
well today and we didn’t make any evaluations as we’re preparing for tomorrow’s
match against the powerful Wang Qiang,” Deddy added.
Aldila’s win in the round of 16 brings relief to
the Indonesia women’s singles tennis team because Aldila is the last remaining
national representative after Beatrice Gumulya failed to advance.
