Hong Kong, China wins gold medal in squash

Hong Kong, China added a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games squash competition after winning 2-0 against India in the women's team squash in the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex in Jakarta on Saturday.

Au Wing Chi Annie (Annie Au) and Ho Tze Lok beat Sunayna Kuruvilla and Joshna Chinappa in two consecutive matches lasting 68 minutes.

On paper, 19-year-old Sunayna is not ranked far below her rival Ho Tze Lok, who sits at number 51, while Kuruvilla is ranked 88th.

From the first set, Ho and Sunayna competed fiercely, with long rallies played out by the two athletes.

However, Sunayna’s small mistakes turned out to be fatal as Ho Tze Lok took the lead in the ninth minute.

In the second set, Ho played more energetically than her rival. Many hard blows and low balls were launched that could not be reached by Sunayna.

As a result, Ho Tze Lok finished the second set in the seventh minute.

Despite being two sets behind, it did not seem to dampen Sunayna’s enthusiasm in the third set. The young Indian player began to read her rival's strategy and counter Ho Tze Lok’s game.

At one point the scores were equal at 10-10.

Sunayna tried to take advantage as Ho seemed overwhelmed by the increasing rhythm of the game.

Entering the 11th minute, the Indian player finished the set with a final score of 12-10. However, Sunayna failed to regain the lead in the fourth set.

Sunayna appeared to lose focus as she made many mistakes, creating a chance for Ho Tze Lok to gain points.

Ho finished the fourth set in the seventh minute and gave the first victory to Hong Kong.

India’s top seed Joshna Chinappa, who was expected to turn things around in the second match, lost 0-3 (3-11, 9-11, 5-11) to Annie Au.

The three-set game lasted a relatively short 28 minutes.

With the defeat, India had to settle for silver in the women's team category.

India also collected four bronzes in the men's singles, women's singles, men's team and women's team competitions in squash at the 2018 Asian Games.
