Chinese Taipei grabbed two gold medals in the 2018 Asian Games men’s and women's 20-kilometer roller skating held at the Jakabaring Sport City, Palembang, South Sumatra on Friday.
The first gold medal was won in the men’s 20 km race by Chao Tsucheng, who booked the fastest time at 33 minutes 51.418 seconds.
The silver and bronze medals were won by Korean (KOR) athletes Choi Gwangho at 33 minutes and 51.853 seconds and Son Gaunseong at 33 minutes and 51.967 seconds.
Chinese Taipei’s dominance in the road race category was confirmed by the victory in the women's 20 km race by Li Mengchu who recorded a time of 44 minutes and 59.929 seconds.
This silver medal was won by Guo Dan from China at 44 minutes and 50.952 seconds and Yang Hochen of Chinese Taipei with the time of 44 minutes and 51.168 seconds.
"This result, two gold and one bronze was our target. We have prepared for a long time, and it was not easy because we had to fight hard against the athletes from China and Korea," said Chinese Taipei manager Chen S at a media conference along with team coach Lim Yungsheng.
Both the men’s and women’s teams from Chinese Taipei were not in the lead in the initial rounds of the races, but they came first after a head-to-head sprint in the last round.
"All athletes have competed well as they followed up with the coaches’ instructions. We have prepared the athletes for five years," he said.
Indonesia, meanwhile, failed to grab any medals in roller skating. Indonesia's top athletes Muhammad Oky Andrianto and Tias Andira failed to win any medals as Tias was eliminated on the 48th lap, so Oky had to fight alone toward the finish line.
Oky, who was wearing jersey number 101, ended the race in 7th place with 33 minutes and 55.998 seconds, 4.563 seconds adrift the gold medalist.
Ten athletes competed in the men’s 20 km, while the women’s 20 km race featured 14 athletes from eight countries.
"We have done our best, and this result is what we have to accept. The competitors here consisted of five world-champions from China, Chinese Taipei and Korea," said Indonesian coach Yedhi Heryadi.
The Indonesian team had targeted the gold medal in the men's category, but Oky failed to maximize the opportunity, although he was in the main group on the last sprint.
Furthermore, Oky was in the wrong position on the last lap (lap 51), in which he found it difficult to penetrate the leading pack and had to settle for 7th position.
The weather was not as hot as in previous days, which benefited the athletes.
