DPR Korea women’s weightlifter Ri
Song-gum won the gold medal in the 48-kilogram class of the 2018 Asian Games
weightlifting competition at JI Expo Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Monday, lifting a
total of 199 kg.
Ri lifted 87 kg in the snatch and
112 kg in the clean and jerk.
The silver
medal went to Indonesian lifter Sri Wahyuni,
who hoisted a total weight of 195 kg, recording 88 kg in the snatch and 107 kg
in the clean and jerk.
Thailand took
bronze after Sukcharoen Thunya
lifted a total weight of 189 kg, with 87 kg in the snatch and 102 kg in the
clean and jerk.
On her first attempt in the snatch,
Ri Song-gum lifted 85 kg. She increased this to 87 kg on her second attempt,
but failed to life 90 kg on her third attempt. In the clean and jerk category,
she successfully lifted 112 kg on her first attempt, but failed to lift 117 kg
on her following two attempts.
In the snatch, Indonesia’s Sri
lifted the heaviest weight in the competition, at 88 kg. On her first attempt,
she lifted 85 kg before failing to lift 88 kg, managing to do so on her third
and final attempt.
With a narrow lead from the snatch,
Sri could have taken home the gold if she was able to match Ri’s 112 kg in the
clean and jerk. Unfortunately for the Indonesian, she came up short, lifting
107kg.
Thai lifter Thunya matched Ri’s 87
kg in the snatch, after lifting 82 kg and 85 kg with her first and second
attempts. Despite having a chance to win gold, Thunya managed a best lift of
only 102 kg in the clean and jerk to finish in third place.
Putri Yolanda, another Indonesia
lifter, managed to lift 72 kg in the snatch after failing on her first two
attempts. She then lifted 90 kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a total
weight of 162 kilograms.
Sri Lankan Lifter Gomas BDH was
disqualified after failing to lift 67 kg in her three attempts in the snatch.
