Japanese kayaker Aki Yazawa won gold in the women's individual kayak slalom category at the Rentang Dam in Majalengka Regency, West Java, on Wednesday. She booked 95.83 seconds with zero penalties.
Yazawa outperformed Chinese kayaker Tong Li, who took silver with 100.17 seconds, 4.34 seconds less than Yazawa, with zero penalties.
In third place, Chinese Taipei’s Chuhan Chang won bronze with 103.80 seconds and a penalty of 2 seconds. Chang improved his timing in the semifinals at 114.59 seconds with a time penalty of 52 seconds.
Secretary-general of the Asian Canoe Confederation Wai hung Luk presented the winners medals.
Meanwhile, the only Indonesian representative in the semifinals, Sumita Kurnia, failed to win a medal in the final with a time of 148.8 seconds and a 4 second penalty. Sumita ranked 7th after Yazawa Aki, Li Tong, Chuhan Chang, Kamila Safina of Kazakhstan at 118.25 seconds, Thatchaporn Pornchai of Thailand at 125.25 seconds and Roxana Razeghian of Iran at 134.03 seconds.
"We tried our best, I know Sumita has been training hard and doing her best, and her performance really needs to be appreciated because this is the first time Indonesia has competed in the Asian Games slalom branch," said Indonesian national team coach Uyun Gunawan.
The Indonesian team still has hope for a medal in the men's individual slalom through 21-year-old Arifal, who will compete in the semifinal on Thursday.
